The scientists have developed and modified the lenses, which can zoom an object by merely blinking twice.

Scientists at the San Diego, University of California, invented the fantastic soft contact lens by calculating the electrooculographic signals that are produced when eyes make movements such as left and right, up and down and blinking. Even when the eye is closed, or the person is in total darkness, these electrical impulses can still be generated.

 Lead researcher Shengqiang Cai told New Scientist “Even if your eye is not seeing anything, many people can still move their eyeball and produce this electro-oculographic signal,”.

The lens that the scientists created can change its focal length, which depends on the signals the eye generates. They used dielectric elastomer to disfigure the soft glass, allowing the focal length to vary by as much as 32 per cent. It lets the lens zoom in on something just by blinking twice.

The researchers said the gadget could have applications in “ adjustable glasses, visual prostheses, and remotely managed robotics soon.” Whether it finishes being used by the Army and government organizations remains to be seen. But a person can imagine the potential of having what are necessarily mini-binoculars built into soldiers’ and spies’ eyes.
